Welcome to NovatoSpirit!  We are a 501c3 nonprofit providing athletic scholarships to children with financial needs. Our mission is to give kids a healthy way to improve their physical and mental health through their own efforts.  Our nonprofit’s registered name is KarmaSpirit—evoking the idea that good efforts yield positive results—but we do business as NovatoSpirit to reflect the community we serve in Novato, Marin County, California.

What Makes NovatoSpirit Unique

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) produced a study showing that vulnerable children have a better chance of being healthy when they have these supports: physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and psychological.

NovatoSpirit offers children all of those significant supports: athletic exercise (physical) with motivated instructors and peers (social) in a safe and caring environment (emotional) that is mentally stimulating (intellectual) in an activity that yields self-confidence and resilience (psychological), due to strong efforts sustained over 5 years or longer.

The NovatoSpirit Difference

  • One-on-one mentorship with instructors

  • Multicultural athletic activities

  • Longterm activity (5-year scholarships for kids with good attendance, communication and behavior)

  • Accountability of participating kids and families

  • Positive impact on physical and mental health

NovatoSpirit is fortunate to operate in a community cherishing children with financial needs and to receive financial backing from donors who wish to support them in ways that lead to effective, positive changes in physical and mental health.

NovatoSpirit’s positive impact has been praised by medical and educational professionals serving children.

The NovatoSpirit program recognizes the value of physical activity and mentorship not only for the children’s physical health, but also for their emotional well-being and development of self esteem. I have been grateful to have the opportunity to work with this outstanding program and consider it to be an amazing resource for my patients and a force of positive change for our community.

NovatoSpirit seeks to enrich students’ bodies and minds by giving them the joy of movement. The Novato Unified School District has always supported Marian and her efforts to empower Novato’s low-income population of students through NovatoSpirit. NovatoSpirit enables students to participate in activities that give them physical fitness, health education, and education into other languages and cultures...
