NovatoSpirit

Welcome to NovatoSpirit!  We are a 501c3 nonprofit providing athletic scholarships to children with financial needs. Our mission is to give kids a healthy way to improve their physical and mental health through their own efforts.  Our nonprofit’s registered name is KarmaSpirit—evoking the idea that good efforts yield positive results—but we do business as NovatoSpirit to reflect the community we serve in Novato, Marin County, California.

Program Overview

A healthy body, mind and soul shouldn’t depend on money, according to Marian Schinske, founder of the nonprofit NovatoSpirit, which provides athletic activities to disadvantaged kids.

All kids should be able to move around and play, but sometimes financial barriers prevent them from getting the healthy exercise they need to grow, learn, and flourish.  That is why the 501c3 public charity KarmaSpirit, dba NovatoSpirit, was founded in 2005.

NovatoSpirit offers athletic scholarships to children from families with financial needs, enabling them to participate in sports programs with teachers who are highly skilled and compassionate, serving as guides and mentors.

Did you know that as much as 35% of public schoolchildren within the Novato Unified School District (an estimated 2,800 kids) are disadvantaged? These kids are likely candidates for a NovatoSpirit scholarship.

NovatoSpirit awards scholarship funding to athletic programs that help youths improve their physical and mental health. We emphasize physical fitness, self-discipline, patience, dedicated practice, and respect for others. To apply, kids must be 7-18 years old, live in Novato and/or go to a Novato school, and have documented financial needs. Scholarships are for selected martial arts programs, dance classes and soccer.
